How to Normalize the Volume of Several Songs: LUFS, Peaks and a Simple Method

Two tracks set to the same peak level can sound very different in loudness to the ear — that's the difference between peak, RMS and loudness (LUFS). Why two tracks at the same peak sound different

A heavily compressed, "loud"-mastered track can share the exact same peak as a dynamic one, but a much higher average energy — so it will sound louder to the ear, even though both hit 0dBFS at their loudest point. That's why simply matching peak level isn't enough: you need to measure each track's integrated loudness (LUFS) and adjust the gain accordingly.

The limits of automatic normalization

Most players and conversion tools apply peak normalization: they raise the volume until the loudest point hits 0dB, without accounting for perceived loudness. The method to even out 5 to 10 tracks

  1. Measure the integrated LUFS of each track with the analysis tool at hand.
  2. Pick a common target (for example −14 LUFS, the most common streaming-music reference) and note each track's gap from that target.
  3. Apply a gain equal to that gap across the whole track, not just the loud passages.
  4. Check no peak exceeds 0dBFS after the gain — reduce slightly if needed.
  5. Listen back to the tracks in final order to confirm the perceived volume is even.
