5, 10 or 15-Second Crossfade?
What the crossfade length changes for the emotion and choreography of a first dance, with a decision table based on tempo and the stylistic gap between the two songs.
The length of the crossfade between the opening slow and the upbeat track completely changes the emotion of a first dance: a short fade (5s) surprises the floor, a medium fade (10s) stays the safest default, a long fade (15s) builds real tension. This guide compares the three lengths and gives a decision table based on the tempo and style of the two songs.
5, 10 or 15 seconds: what it changes
| Length | Felt effect | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| 5 seconds | Quick switch, a sharp surprise effect | Two songs already close in style and BPM |
| 10 seconds | Natural transition, the safest default | The vast majority of first dances |
| 15 seconds | Gradual build, builds anticipation in the audience | A more pronounced style or tempo gap between the two songs |
What determines the right length
- BPM gap: the bigger the gap, the more a longer fade smooths the transition. See our BPM & beatmatching guide.
- Style gap: from an acoustic slow to an electronic track, a 15s fade softens the break; between two songs from the same world, 5s is enough.
- Planned choreography: if a specific step must land exactly on the song change, a fixed, repeatable length is essential — test it identically several times before the day.
The curve matters as much as the length
An equal-power curve avoids any noticeable volume dip at the middle of the fade, whatever its length — see our crossfade techniques guide for the full detail on available curves.
