How do you make a sangeet mashup?
Pick 3 to 5 songs for a 2 to 4 minute act, write down the start and end time of the part you dance to in each one, and put them in the order of your story. Then join them on the beat: a crossfade between songs with close tempos, a clean cut, a sound effect or a short pause when the energy jumps, and finish on a real ending rather than in the middle of a line. In MixClap all of this happens in your browser; you hear the whole act before paying, then download one MP3 or WAV for the DJ.
What making it looks like
Three screens: put the songs in the order of the act, set each join, download one file.

Order the songs: the total length of the act updates as you go.
Set each join and loop it until the step lands on the beat.
Download one MP3 320, WAV or FLAC file, named and ready to send.
Make the mashup in 6 steps
The same order a wedding DJ follows when a bride sends her songs, minus the editing software.
- 1
Write the timestamps first
For each song, note where your part starts and ends (for example "Song 2: 0:45 → 1:38"). This is what DJs ask brides for before they edit anything, and it lets the choreographer and the person editing work from the same list.
- 2
Use the original song files
Start from the real audio (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, or the sound of an MP4 video), never a recording made with a phone next to a speaker: it will sound hollow on the venue system. MixClap takes up to 50 tracks per mix.
- 3
Keep only the part you dance to
Drop the files into MixClap and set the start and end of each song on its waveform. Cut where a phrase starts, usually on the first beat of a line or of the hook, not in the middle of a word.
- 4
Choose how each song hands over
The default join is an 8-beat crossfade that eases the tempo of one song into the next. Switch to a clean cut, a fade, a sound effect (vinyl, explosion, horn or vinyl rewind) or a pause of 1 to 30 seconds for an entry, a pose or a dialogue.
- 5
End on a real ending
An act that stops mid-line sounds unfinished. Add the last song a second time and keep only its final bars, so the music ends the way the song really ends: the trick DJs use when the part you dance to is in the middle of the track.
- 6
Listen to the whole act, then download
Play the full mashup for free and rehearse to it. When it is right, download one MP3 320 (it plays everywhere), or WAV or FLAC if the sound engineer asks, and name it in running order, for example "03 Bride squad 3m40.mp3".
How long should each sangeet performance be?
Between 2 and 4 minutes per act, by every planning guide we read. They differ on the number of acts, not on their length: a family show stays under about 90 minutes so that dinner and the open dance floor are not pushed back.
That length is shorter than it sounds. Five songs kept almost whole already make more than 6 minutes, as a DJ demonstrates in his medley tutorial. A 3-minute act is 3 songs of about 60 seconds, or 4 to 6 hooks of 30 to 45 seconds.
| Source | One act | Songs per mashup | Whole show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Velvet Knot | 2–4 min; kids’ act about 90 s | 3–4 songs of about 90 s | Scripted acts under 75–90 min |
| Shaadipath, planning guide | 4 min maximum | Cut by the choreographer to fit | 10–12 acts at most, 90 min |
| Shaadipath, song guide | 3–4 min | Not stated | 8–12 acts, under 90 min |
| Dodeewane | 2–3 min | Not stated | 8–10 acts |
| Dream Wedding Hub | 2–4 min, longer for the couple or family finale | 4–7 songs of 30–45 s | 15–20 acts in 45–60 min |
A running order that works
Guides agree on rising energy: the youngest or the elders open, the two families face off in the middle, the couple comes late and everyone joins for the finale. They disagree on one point: some close the show with the couple, Velvet Knot puts the couple just before a group finale.
Each act needs its own file, in the order of the evening. If one family prepares several acts, export each one separately so the DJ can start them one by one.
| Slot | Who | Length | Music direction, examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opener | Cousins, kids or a flash mob | 90 s to 3 min | One punchy number: Gallan Goodiyaan, Nachde Ne Saare |
| Elders and parents | One act per family | 2–3 min | Their era’s classics: Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna, Say Shava Shava |
| Bride’s side vs groom’s side | Friends and siblings | 3–4 min each | Current hits and dhol remixes: London Thumakda, Tauba Tauba |
| Funny act | Siblings, friends | 2–3 min | A teasing mashup with film dialogues between the songs |
| Couple | Bride and groom | 3–4 min | One slow song, then one upbeat: Kesariya, Raataan Lambiyan |
| Finale | Both families | 2–4 min | A medley everyone knows, straight into the open dance floor |
Blending Bollywood songs with different tempos
A sangeet mashup rarely keeps one tempo: a slow romantic song, then a dhol track, then a Punjabi hit. Whether a smooth blend works depends on how far apart the two tempos are.
MixClap detects the tempo of each song and its crossfade can ease one into the other by stretching the music up to 12 % without changing the pitch. Beyond that, a stretched song sounds wrong to dancers who know it: do not force the blend, use one of the joins below. To check two songs before you choose, the free BPM finder gives the tempo of each file.
- Tempos close to each other: an 8-beat crossfade, the default. The step carries on without a bump.
- A big jump in energy (slow song into a dhol track): a clean cut on the first beat of the new song. It reads as intentional and gives the dancers a clear cue.
- A change of scene or of group: a sound effect such as the explosion or the vinyl rewind, so the audience hears the switch.
- An entry, a pose or a line of dialogue: a pause of 1 to 30 seconds between two songs.
Film dialogues, entries and poses
A well-known film line between two songs is a sangeet classic: planning sites recommend it to add humour and to give the next group time to take position.
In MixClap, a dialogue is simply a track of its own: an audio file, or the sound of a video clip, placed between two songs, with a clean cut or a short pause on each side. MixClap plays tracks one after the other; it does not lay a voice over a song that keeps playing. If you need a voice-over on top of the music, a multitrack editor such as Audacity does that.
Do it yourself, use an app, or pay an editor?
Most families make the mashup themselves: the most watched tutorials on YouTube for "how to mix songs for a dance performance" are phone-app walkthroughs with millions of views. The difference between options is in the joins and in the time you spend.
| Option | Cost | Joins | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone "merge audio" apps | Free with ads | Songs placed end to end, often abrupt | A quick trim of one song |
| Audacity | Free, to install | Crossfades you align by ear on a timeline | Voice-overs on top of the music, full control, time to learn |
| MixClap | Free to build and hear; 4.99 € per download (1.49 € in India) | On the beat, tempo eased automatically | Several acts for one evening, ready in minutes |
| Freelance editor (Contra) | From 15 USD for 1–3 mixes, 1-day delivery | Done for you | When you have no time at all |
| Choreographer package | ₹30,000–₹1.5 lakh for 8–10 sessions (India); 800–1,700 USD for a group routine (US) | Usually edited for you | Large groups and formation-heavy acts |
Before the night: the music checklist
Most problems on a sangeet night are not about the edit, they are about the hand-off. These are the points planners insist on.
- Send every performer their final cut early, so nobody rehearses to an old version.
- One file per act, named with its number in the running order, all in one folder.
- Give the DJ the files in advance, plus a printed cue sheet for the DJ and the MC.
- Keep a backup on a USB drive and on a phone, tested before guests arrive.
- No streaming links and no phone handed to the DJ between acts: that is how the wrong song starts.
- Test every file on the venue sound system, ideally during the stage rehearsal.
Sangeet mashup questions
How many songs should a sangeet mashup have?
Three to five for a 2 to 4 minute act. Velvet Knot suggests 3 to 4 songs of about 90 seconds; Dream Wedding Hub goes up to 4 to 7 hooks of 30 to 45 seconds. More songs means shorter excerpts, not a longer act.
What is the easiest way to make a sangeet mashup on a laptop?
Use a tool that joins songs on the beat for you. In MixClap you open the page in your browser, drop the songs, set each cut and download one file; there is nothing to install. Audacity is the free alternative if you are ready to align each crossfade by hand.
Can I make it on my phone?
MixClap works on phones and tablets, but a computer is recommended: cutting on a waveform and checking each join is much easier on a larger screen, and the file is ready faster.
How do I blend songs with different tempos?
If the tempos are close, use a crossfade: MixClap eases one tempo into the other by up to 12 % without changing the pitch. If they are far apart, cut cleanly on the first beat of the new song, or use a sound effect or a short pause.
Can I add film dialogues to the mashup?
Yes. Add the dialogue as its own track (an audio file or the sound of a video) between two songs. MixClap plays tracks one after the other, so the dialogue is heard on its own, not over the music.
Which file should I give the DJ?
An MP3 at 320 kbps plays on every system. Bring WAV or FLAC if the sound engineer asks for it, and keep a copy on a USB drive and on a phone.
How much does it cost?
Building the mashup and listening to the whole act are free; the preview carries a short spoken tag. Downloading the clean file costs 4.99 € per mix, or 1.49 € in India, paid once, with no subscription and no account.
Are my songs uploaded anywhere?
The audio is processed in your browser, on your device. To check the quality of mixes, MixClap keeps a private copy of your songs for 30 days at most.
Can I post the performance video online with these songs?
MixClap edits the files you provide; it does not grant any music rights. Platforms such as YouTube or Instagram may mute or restrict a video that uses copyrighted songs, so check before you post.
