The most popular first dance song appears in only one couple’s playlist in seven. We analysed 200 public Deezer playlists that couples named “first dance”: 1,501 different songs, 78.9% of them chosen only once. Here is the real ranking, the numbers that matter on the day, and a tool that finds the songs that go with the one you already love.

What 200 playlists reveal
Nobody picks the same song
The 10 most chosen songs appear in only 41.5% of playlists, and the whole top 100 in 74.5%. One couple in four kept nothing from this ranking. A ready-made list is a starting point; the decision happens elsewhere.
Many songs are too long
33.7% of the songs added run over 4 minutes, and so do 28% of the top 50. Most first dances last 2:30 to 3:00: past that, guests drift and the couple runs out of moves. A Thousand Years runs 4:45.
Classics weigh far more than in Europe
Elvis, Etta James, Ben E. King, Nat King Cole and Sinatra take five of the top 20 spots. In French couples’ playlists the same songs rank lower, behind modern ballads and a surprise dance track. In Spain and Latin America, Thinking Out Loud is No. 1, followed by Il Divo and Sin Bandera. Five songs make the top 10 everywhere: A Thousand Years, All of Me, Perfect, Thinking Out Loud and Can’t Help Falling in Love.
If you like… couples also kept
Already have a favourite? Start there. For each song we looked for the songs that show up unusually often in the same playlists. “4 times more often than average” means couples who kept your song were 4 times more likely than others to keep that one too.

The best first dance songs by style
Timeless classics
Can’t Help Falling in Love, At Last, Stand By Me, L-O-V-E, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Let’s Stay Together, The Way You Look Tonight, What a Wonderful World. Short, known by every generation, and nothing to cut on most of them.
In three, for a waltz
Several of the top songs count in three, which makes simple waltz steps feel natural: Can’t Help Falling in Love, At Last, A Thousand Years, Perfect and Unchained Melody.
Country
Amazed (Lonestar), Beautiful Crazy and Forever After All (Luke Combs), Speechless (Dan + Shay), Die a Happy Man (Thomas Rhett), You’re Still the One (Shania Twain). Brad Paisley’s Then runs 5:22, the longest of the group.
For couples who don’t like dancing
Go short and familiar: the room sings along and watches you less. Nothing to cut on What a Wonderful World (2:17), Fly Me to the Moon (2:30), L-O-V-E (2:32), Stand By Me (2:54) or At Last (3:00). Nothing stops you inviting everyone onto the floor at the first chorus.
Upbeat surprises
For the moment the slow song stops dead: Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, This Will Be, Marry You, Love on Top, You Make My Dreams. Our first dance mix guide shows how to join the two.

Lyrics worth knowing before you choose
These songs are in the top 100, and their lyrics tell a story other than a declaration of love. What a song means to you matters more than what its writer meant: this is information, not advice.
Song
What the lyrics are about
Here Comes The Sun · The Beatles
A song about the sun coming back after winter, not a declaration.
The Scientist · Coldplay
About regret and wanting to start a relationship over.
Stay With Me · Sam Smith
About a one-night stand: asking someone to stay, without it being love.
I Will Always Love You · Whitney Houston
Written by Dolly Parton (1974) to say goodbye to her stage partner Porter Wagoner. It is a farewell song, even if it sounds like a declaration.
Every Breath You Take · The Police
Sting has described it as a song about surveillance and possessiveness. Not in this top 100, but a classic trap.
Too long? Shorten it without anyone noticing
A first dance usually lasts 2:30 to 3:00. To shorten a song without an awkward fade, remove a whole block (often the second verse or a repeated chorus) and join on the start of a musical phrase. Our guide to clean cut points has the method.
MixClap’s song length tool does it for you: upload the song, set the length you want, and it suggests several versions cut on the beat, never in the middle of a sung line. Listening is free; you only pay to download.
Slow, then surprise: blending two songs
A popular format starts with about 1:30 of a slow song, then switches to an upbeat track the whole room knows. Three choices matter: where to cut the slow song, how to switch (clean cut, effect or crossfade) and where to enter the second song. Our article on crossfade length helps you decide, and the medley calculator gives the length of each part.
To build it, mix two songs in MixClap: upload your files, set the cut and the transition, listen, then export the file for your DJ.
Deciding together
The ranking gives ideas; it does not choose for you. Three simple rules end the debate:
Each of you lists five songs without seeing the other’s list, then compare. Songs on both lists go to the final.
A veto is a veto. A song that makes one of you uncomfortable is out, even if the other loves it.
Try both finalists in the living room. Dance them, then ask: were we comfortable? Does it feel like us? Do we want to do it again?
Data collected on 26 October 2026 through Deezer’s public API. We kept public playlists whose name contains “first dance”, with 2 to 60 songs. Of 209 playlists found, we removed 2 made for the party afterwards and 7 copies of the same list. Deezer’s editorial playlists are not counted.

A song is grouped across editions (album, compilation, remaster); a cover by another artist counts separately. Release years, styles and lyric notes are added by hand; lengths come from the most common version. “Songs couples also kept” use songs present in at least 3 playlists.
Limits: a working playlist is not a final choice, and Deezer’s English-speaking users lean towards Europe more than the US, so American favourites may be under-counted. Next update: January 2027. The top 100 is free to reuse with credit to MixClap: top 100 as CSV.

Frequently asked questions

Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley, found in 13.5% of the 200 first dance playlists we analysed, ahead of At Last (Etta James) and A Thousand Years (Christina Perri).
How long should a first dance song be?+
Usually 2:30 to 3:00. Many popular choices run over 4 minutes, so couples often remove a verse or a repeated chorus and join the song on the start of a musical phrase.
Which first dance songs are in waltz time?+
Can’t Help Falling in Love, At Last, A Thousand Years, Perfect and Unchained Melody all count in three, so simple waltz steps fit them naturally.
What are good short first dance songs?+
