Your routine runs 2:30. The song runs 3:45. That is 75 seconds too many, and you have three options: cut the end, cut the middle, or remove a whole section. Only one of the three gives you a track that keeps its original intro, its build and its ending. Here is the method, the maths, and the five mistakes that make an edit audible.
The three ways to shorten a song
Every solution you will find — video editor, online trimmer, phone app — comes down to one of these three approaches. They are not equally good.

Why trimming the end almost never works
A pop song is built like a story: an intro that sets the scene, verses that tell it, choruses that repeat, a bridge that lifts and an ending that closes. Cutting the last 75 seconds is like tearing the final three chapters out of a novel. The audience will not name the problem, but they will feel that it stops at the wrong moment — especially on stage, where the end of the music has to land on the end of the movement.
The second problem is more concrete: the last chorus of a pop track is almost always the most intense one — doubled vocals, an octave lift, the full drum kit. That is exactly the moment you want for the end of your piece. Remove it and you finish on the weakest part of the song.
Removing a whole section: the method that holds up
The principle is simple: instead of shortening the track from its edges, you take out what it already has twice in the middle. A standard pop song contains three near-identical choruses and two verses over the same chord grid. Dropping the second verse and one chorus buys you a full minute without anyone noticing — because the ear does not count choruses, it recognises a shape.
The golden rule: only join two points that are musically interchangeable. The end of chorus 2 can run into the start of the bridge, because in the original the end of chorus 1 already ran into something comparable. Joining the middle of a verse to the middle of a chorus, on the other hand, creates an energy jump and usually a chord change the ear reads as a wrong note.
Spotting verses, choruses and bridges by ear
You do not need to read music. Three clues are enough, in this order:
- The lyrics. The chorus repeats the same words. Verses do not. This is the fastest and most reliable clue.
- The density. A chorus has more instruments, more vocal layers and a higher perceived level. You can see it on a waveform: choruses are the thicker blocks.
- The bridge. Usually around two thirds in, sparser, often without drums or on a different grid. It is the first candidate for removal when you need to save a lot of time.

How many bars do you need to remove?
Work in bars, not seconds: that is what guarantees the track lands back on its feet. In 4/4, one bar lasts 240 ÷ BPM seconds.
Always round to a multiple of 8 bars. Removing 37 bars shifts the musical phrase and is audible immediately, even if the final duration is exact. If the numbers do not land cleanly, move your target duration by two or three seconds rather than breaking the phrase.
Making the join work: bar, phase, fade
Three conditions have to be met for a join to go unnoticed.
- Land on beat one. The exit point and the entry point must both sit on a downbeat, ideally at the start of a 4 or 8-bar phrase.
- Align the waveforms. Two passages can be on the beat and still meet out of phase: the bass cancels and you hear a thud. Shifting the entry point by a few milliseconds fixes it.
- Keep the fade short. 20 to 60 milliseconds of crossfade, no more. Longer and you hear two passages stacked; shorter and you hear the click.
Should you touch the tempo?
As a last resort, and only a little. The ear picks up a tempo change from around 3% on a familiar track, and singers hear the pitch shift well before that. In practice:
- Under 2%: inaudible, and useful to land exactly on a duration imposed to the second.
- 2 to 5%: noticeable on a well-known track, acceptable for background music.
- Over 5%: the voice changes timbre. Reserved for deliberate remixes.
So the right practice is to do 95% of the work by removing sections, then let a sub-2% tempo adjustment absorb the remainder — or accept a final duration two seconds off if the tempo has to stay strictly intact, which is the case for a dance class counting beats.

Five mistakes that give an edit away
- Cutting mid-word. Even perfectly on the beat, a truncated syllable is audible. Place the cut after the last sustained vowel.
- Forgetting the reverb tail. The end of a chorus usually trails 1 to 2 seconds of reverb. Cutting exactly on the beat cuts the tail too, which sounds like a door slamming.
- Removing a bar count that is not a multiple of 4. The duration will be right and the phrasing will be wrong.
- Removing two adjacent sections. Dropping verse 2 and chorus 2 back to back jumps straight from the end of chorus 1 to the bridge: the song feels gutted. Spread the removals out.
- Not checking on headphones. Join artefacts — clicks, phase jumps, level steps — are often inaudible on a phone speaker and perfectly obvious on a hall PA.
